Professional Practice
After a successful maritime legal, commercial, and academic career, Aleka has been practising as a Commercial and Maritime Arbitrator since 2007. Occasionally, she acts as a Mediator.
She has built a varied arbitration practice and has been appointed as an arbitrator in numerous references relating to disputes involving issues in: charter parties; commodities and bills of lading; ship sale & purchase; shipbuilding; marine insurance; ship management, and other commercial agreements including offshore structures.
She is acting as a sole arbitrator, panel member, and chairman of arbitration panels under the LMAA Terms or the LCIA Rules.
Aleka has worked in shipping for over 40 years, gaining legal and commercial experience in most areas of shipping disputes. At first, she acquired experience in claims handling with marine insurance brokers, the Britannia P & I Club, and Richards Butler, before she joined the firm of HFW and practised as a solicitor in marine litigation and arbitration (1979-1993); during this time, she dealt with complex claims arising from total losses of ships, other accidents, charter party and bill of lading disputes, sale of goods, insurance, partnership and financial disputes, management agreements, MOA sale and purchase and shipbuilding disputes.
As Head of the Shipping Law Unit, which she set up, at University College London (1993-2006), she pioneered education in maritime risk management and loss prevention and founded the London Shipping Law Centre. She advised shipowners on legal risk management, the ISM and ship-safety, and delivered in-house seminars promoting “quality in shipping” – as a result, she further gained industry knowledge of commercial and technical operations.
Aleka taught Admiralty Law, Marine Insurance, and Carriage of Goods by Sea, at UCL and served as a Professor of Maritime law until 2011.
She has authored: “Modern Maritime Law and Risk Management” 2 volumes (3rd edn. 2013) Informa law; Contributed chapters to other books (incl. Marine Insurance and Shipbuilding); published many articles covering a variety of Maritime Law subjects – see publications at www.alekasheppard.com.
