LIDW 2022: Navigating Sustainability

In line with the sustainability theme for London International Disputes Week (LIDW), the LMAA co-hosted with HFW and Quadrant Chambers on 13 May 2022 a hybrid seminar entitled ‘Navigating Sustainability from Regulation to Dispute Resolution’.

The seminar was held at HFW and was followed by a drinks reception in the firm’s garden.

Daniella Horton, LMAA Full Member and former Honorary Secretary, spoke about the LMAA’s arbitration and ADR procedures, including Early Neutral Evaluation, noting their sustainability credentials. She drew attention, for example, to the comparative rarity of hearings and well-established practices of delivering submissions, documents and bundles in electronic form.

The seminar was chaired by Poonam Melwani QC, Head of Quadrant Chambers. Other participants were Alessio Sbraga and Jonathan Webb, partners in HFW, Jamie Wallace, Legal Director at the Standard Club, and Nigel Cooper QC of Quadrant Chambers. The impact of global carbon emission regulations, and the consequences for voyage, time and bareboat charters, and disputes arising under them, were the subject of lively discussion in the presentations and in a Q&A with the audience.
