The Association sad to report the passing of Michael Mabbs on 6 March 2025.
Michael was 95 years old. Before becoming a successful shipbroker and subsequently an equally successful maritime arbitrator, he was a Royal Engineer, a member of the Royal Kenyan Police and a top rugby player in Kenya. He was also a longstanding member of the Baltic Exchange.
Michael served on the LMAA Committee and was actively involved in LMAA life for many years. He brought good sense and discipline to the many arbitrations in which he was appointed in the 1970s and 1980s. I remember a tall, ramrod-straight figure who brooked no nonsense from the participants but who was very kind to everyone – and very clear in his awards.
We salute Michael’s memory and send our condolences to Patricia, his wife of 70 years, and his family.
