In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Full Member John Schofield. John died on Monday 20 May 2024.

Born in 1942, John was a shipping and commercial man through and through. Having trained at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, he served in seagoing ships, from minesweepers to commando carriers, and as Naval Overseer at Swan Hunter shipyard, where he “stood by” newbuildings. A graduate with an MA in Business Law, he qualified as a barrister of Gray’s Inn and became an Assistant Director of A Bilbrough & Co Ltd, the managers of the London P&I Club. He then joined as director the London office of a group operating some thirty ships, including tankers, dry bulk carriers and passenger vessels. A member of the Baltic Exchange and Freeman of the City of London, John became a full-time arbitrator in 1999. He joined the LMAA as a Supporting Member in 1989 and was elected a Full Member in 1993.

Among shipowners, charterers, lawyers and arbitrators, John was widely known as the author of the standard text on the legal and contractual effects of delays to ships, Laytime and Demurrage, currently in its eighth edition. The book is “praised for its unrivalled coverage and lucid writing style”. He shared his expertise at conferences and seminars, including the International Congress of Maritime Arbitrators, and often contributed to maritime periodicals.

We send our deepest sympathy to John’s family and friends.
