It is with deep sadness that the Association reports the passing of Donald Davies, one of the founding members of the LMAA. Donald passed away on 5 May 2023, after a lengthy illness.
Donald became a Full Member in February 1968. A master mariner, barrister of Gray’s Inn and former senior lecturer at the City of London College, he was an active arbitrator until his retirement in 1989, serving as a member of the Committee of the Association between 1985 and 1987. Donald was one of the best known and most highly regarded maritime arbitrators of his generation. Among his other distinctions, he was a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Nautical Institute. His book, “Commencement of Laytime”, is in its fourth edition.
We send our sympathy to Donald’s family. We will remember him with great affection and respect.
